March 2013 Newsletter

March is … National Kidney Month

The goal of Nation Kidney Month is to focus the nation’s attention on kidney health – and for good reason. Kidney disease is a serious and increasingly common condition affecting the health of more than 31 million Americans.

Kidney diseases are most often caused by diabetes and high blood pressure, and can lead to a heart attack, stroke, kidney failure and death.

Anyone can develop kidney problems, however, there is a greater risk for those who:

* Have Diabetes

* Have High Blood Pressure

* Have a Family Member with Kidney Disease

* Are African American, Hispanic, Native American or Asian

* Are 60 Years of Age or Older

What are the Warning Signs?

Unfortunately 9 out of 10 people with early kidney disease don’t know it. More often than not there are no noticeable symptoms. The only way to know that your kidneys are working properly is to get tested. If caught early, kidney disease can be treated.

Don’t Be a Statistic!

Protect yourself and the people you love. . . National Kidney Month is the perfect time to take simple actions that can make a significant difference in your health and the prevention of kidney diseases such as, increased exercise, modifying your diet to include healthier choices and get screened.

Welcome to our updated monthly newsletter. It’s still full of information you can use, but in a customer friendly format. Please let us know how you like it.

We now offer additional convenience in booking rides through our mobile app (m.qtsaz.com) as well as secure email and customized fax forms. If you have a special request – just let us know.
Thank you,

—————————————————-

Ideas for a Healthy Valentine’s Day!

Is candy a no go? For those who are exploring a healthier way to celebrate Valentine’s Day this year, we have a few treats that you’ll love and will love you back. According to the census bureau, Americans eat more than 24 pounds of candy per person each year. It can be hard to avoid, but there are other great things to eat.

February is also national heart month, so why not focus on some heart healthy treats.

For breakfast, think a fruit smoothie packed with berries, which are a wonderful antioxidant. For 12 ounces, there’s 220 calories and 0 grams of fat. You can make it with Greek yogurt or milk.

Looking for a satisfying snack? We recommend nuts, which are a wonderful heart health food. You want to portion them out, however: 1 ounce almonds is 160 calories and 12 grams of fat; 1 ounce walnuts is 180 calories and 18 grams of fat.

And what about that sweet tooth? Two dark chocolate strawberries have 80 calories and 4 grams of fat. Studies are showing dark chocolate has some heart health components, as well. Just remember that dark chocolate needs to be 70-percent or more dark chocolate. You can even add a few almonds to the chocolate strawberries.

—————————————————-

2013 Phoenix Heart Walk – Saturday March 23rd

Do your heart some good and join thousands of walkers as we step out and have fun – all to support the American Heart Association. To join this special event – go to: www.PhoenixHeartWalk.org or call 602-414-5320.

See you there!

—————————————————-

Going Paperless? QTS Can Help. . .

Advancing technology is changing the healthcare industry exponentially. In what was once an industry of chart after chart, healthcare has become paperless in the delivery of care, operations and administrative processes. These transitions to new technologies are making improvements in everything from medical procedures, the wireless transfer of information, management of records, and finance and accounting systems. Most importantly, the transformations are improving patient care and reducing costs.

In addition to minimizing our own footprint, QTS is also committed to making the reservation, communication, and document retention easier and nearly paper free. From our online submission forms, which can be customized to your facilities specific needs, to the electronic confirmation, cancellation or change confirmation, invoicing and payment process, we can do it all with the click of a mouse or over the phone.

Let us know what works best for you, so we can continue our work together in the most efficient and environmentally friendly way possible.

To Our Favorite Customer,

Welcome to 2013! Time to get a quick start on those New Year’s Resolutions, to cover up your plants on frosty nights, to watch football and more football – and more football, and time permitting – to get out and enjoy all that our wonderful Arizona has to offer!

Thank you for all your support in 2012, and please continue to provide your feedback as we work throughout the year to continuously improve our service to you.

At QTS, we’re all about Safety, Reliability, and Value – and working every day to meet and exceed your expectations.

Thank you, The QTS Newsletter Team 602.371.1000

—————————————————-

Wheelchair Safety with thanks to Kaye Swain

With many of our passengers using wheelchairs, it’s important to routinely check the condition of the chair and make immediate repairs as needed. Check the wheels regularly for flat tires or loose ones. A wheelchair wheel lock will not work on a flat or loose tire. Keep an eye on the wheel spokes as well. Damaged, broken, or loose spokes can interfere with moving the wheelchair or locking the wheels. It’s best to always go forward with a wheelchair unless you are going backwards through a doorway. Some wheelchairs have arms that are removable when the patient wants to move to a bed, toilet, or car. Very handy.

—————————————————-

Client Survey and Feedback Thank you for your time and responses!

In December, QTS conducted a broad client survey to identify and validate needs and priorities – and how our performance matches those needs and priorities.

Thank you for taking the time to complete and return the surveys. Our management team is working through the data and establishing improvement plans where needed.

Our commitment to you is to continuously improve our service and our value as your preferred transportation provider. If you have additional feedback at any time, please use our internet survey (www.QTSaz.com) or simply reply to this email.

—————————————————-

What’s New At Justa Center

Join Us For Our Annual Mardi Gras Fundraiser!

St. Patrick’s Catholic Community and Silverado Senior Living are throwing a Mardi Gras party to benefit the Justa Center, and you are invited!

Join us on Saturday, February 9, at St. Patrick’s Fenlon Hall (10815 N. 84th St., Scottsdale) for a casual evening of Cajun food, raffles, silent auctions, and N’awlins-style jazz. The festivities start at 6:30 p.m., and tickets can be purchased for $40 each atwww.justacenter.org. Or you can reserve a limited number of tables for 8 for $370 each.

Can’t make it but would still like to donate? Click on the “donate” button on our website to make your contribution, which may qualify for a tax credit in the State of Arizona.

Let the good times roll, while helping the Justa Center continue its mission of finding homes and needed services for homeless senior citizens.

Home For The Holidays

Viesta is a 58-year-old veteran of the U.S. Navy who first came to Justa Center in December 2011, after losing her job and spending the better part of a year in the hospital. Due to her health and inability to find a job, she lost her apartment and eventually became homeless. Upon her arrival at Justa Center, she was able to see a foot doctor, as well as our nurse, employment counselor, and housing specialist.

Viesta did not plan to be homeless for long, however. Rather than take a dead-end job, she obtained a scholarship to study social work, which will help her land her dream job of caring for people. Through the help of our housing specialist, we were able to move Viesta into her new apartment in December, along with furniture and other necessary household items that were donated to the Center. It was a very Merry Christmas for Viesta, and things will definitely be looking up for her in the New Year.

You Have Our Sincerest Gratitude

There is no way we could continue our mission of helping homeless seniors find safe places to live if it weren’t for the numerous donations that caring individuals and companies make on a regular basis. This month, we would like to especially thank the following companies for their support of Justa Center:

Silverado Senior Living, which hosted a Christmas Gala to collect money, as well as other much-needed items. This is an annual event, which always features delicious food, amazing entertainment, and compassionate people coming together to help homeless seniors.

Intel, which donated a large number of items to Justa Center; and

QTS (Quality Transport Services), which provided Justa Center with vanloads of donations. The day of delivery was much fun with all local TV stations here.

We also want to thank the following veteran organizations for their continued support of Justa Center. They have a demonstrated a true commitment in helping us end homelessness for our seniors:

American Legion Auxiliary – Sierra Vista

American Legion Auxiliary – Unit 107

American Legion Auxiliary – Chandler

American Legion Auxiliary – Phoenix

American Legion Post 91 – Gilbert

American legion Post 12 – Wickenburg

Justa Center was very blessed to have so many donations come in during the month of December (far more than we could possibly list). For all who donated their time, money, and items, we are truly grateful.

—————————————————

Blanket and Jacket Drive for the Justa Center

During November and Early December, the QTS team organized a Blanket and Jacket Drive in support of the Justa Center in Phoenix. The intent was to collect warm winter clothing for the many homeless Seniors and Veterans in our community.

The response was overwhelming, with over 500 blankets and jackets and warm winter clothing collected. Our generous QTS team members contributed, as did many, many partners and health care facilities all across the Valley.

We hoped to collect several dozen blankets and jackets, but gathered hundreds!

Many of our team members devoted countless hours to make this effort a success. Cassie, Alice, Derrik, Dana, and many more.

We are proud to have helped our community Seniors and Vets in need.

Thank you for your support, your contributions, and your encouragement.

The Justa Center

The streets are not safe for homeless individuals in general, but older people are particularly vulnerable. Justa Center is a day resource center for those individuals over the age of 55 who have nowhere to live.

As an integral part of the safety net, Justa Center helps people address the problems that have caused their homelessness, which can include everything catastrophic medical issues, job loss, substance abuse, and/or mental health issues. Once members move out, the safety net continues, as Justa staff visit periodically to ensure they are doing well on their own.

50% of homeless are veterans of the armed services. These are men and women who fought in Korea, Vietnam and other places to defend the interests of our nation and its allies. Justa Center helps senior homeless veterans rebuild their lives and find safe places to live.

Featured Recipe: Thanksgiving Safety!

1. Keep the cooking range free of clutter. Even though you have myriad dishes to prepare, don’t overload a cook top with too many pots and pans.

2. Do not try to hold your child in one arm while cooking with the other.

3. Never put a glass casserole or lid on the stove or over a burner.

4. Do not pour water on a grease fire.

5. Avoid using a turkey fryer. Because turkey fryers pose a number of distinct safety concerns, including burn and fire hazards.

6. Keep a clean work surface. Be sure to wash surfaces, utensils, the sink and hands after handling raw food.

7. Un-stuff the turkey. According to the USDA, for optimum safety, stuffing a turkey is not recommended.

8. Thaw the bird with care. If using a frozen turkey, the USDA recommends thawing it in the refrigerator in its original wrapping, in a tray or pan that can catch any juices that may leak.

9. Call for help. USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline: 888-674-6854

–thanks to UL

——————————————

Safe Trick or Treating Tips
Many Thanks to Halloween-Safety.com

Children should always go out trick or treating accompanied by a responsible adult.
Make sure and stick to the curfew times and stick to subdivisions and areas with a lot of homes so your kids can get in as much trick or treating as possible in a few hours time.
Plan a safe route so parents know where their older kids will be at all times. Set a time for their return home.
Let your children know not to cut through back alleys and fields if they are out alone. Make sure they know to stay in populated areas and not to go off the beaten track.
Instruct your children not to eat any treats until they bring them home to be examined by you.
Instruct your child to never go into the home of a stranger or get into their car.
Make sure your child carries a flashlight, glow stick or has reflective tape on their costume to make them more visible to cars.
About Us

Thank your for your confidence in us. We value your business and strive to exceed your expectations.

But … it is cooling down a bit, and drying out a bit, and we know the beautiful fall weather is coming soon.

We’ve had a busy month here at QTS – welcoming a couple of new drivers to our team and the new vehicles for them. We also welcomed several new customers – and we look forward to working with you and supporting your assisted transportation needs – 24 hours a day – 7 days a week.

Alice and Derrik are on the road constantly to visit our customers – existing, new, and prospective – and of course to drop off pads, pens, patient envelopes, and everyone’s favorite – candy jars! If it’s time for a rate sheet review, a discussion about expanding service requirements, or you just want to say “Hi” – please call our main number 602.371.1000 and ask for Alice or Derrik.

To our Jewish friends and their families, we wish you a happy and healthy new year. Shana Tova from QTS.

Please enjoy our monthly newsletter.

It’s only the middle of August, but school is back in session (Please Drive Carefully), and we all know the heat will break soon (Really!). ______________________________

Nursing = Learning and Compassion

1. Florence Nightingale: Nursing is an art: and if it is to be made an art, it requires an exclusive devotion as hard a preparation, as any painter’s or sculptor’s work; for what is the having to do with dead canvas or dead marble, compared with having to do with the living body, the temple of God’s spirit? It is one of the Fine Arts: I had almost said, the finest of Fine Arts.

2. Jean Watson: Caring is the essence of nursing.

3. Myrtle Aydelotte: Nursing encompasses an art, a humanistic orientation, a feeling for the value of the individual, and an intuitive sense of ethics, and of the appropriateness of action taken.

4. Florence Nightingale: Unless we are making progress in our nursing every year, every month, every week, take my word for it we are going back.

5. Erin Pettengill: We often think of nursing as giving meds on time, checking an X-ray to see if the doctor needs to be called, or taking an admission at 2:00 a.m. with a smile on our faces. Too often, we forget all the other things that make our job what it truly is: caring and having a desire to make a difference.

6. Christine Belle: Our job as nurses is to cushion the sorrow and celebrate the joy, everyday, while we are “just doing our jobs.”

Thanks to www.NursingSchools.net
________________________________

Thanks for reading – and thank you for being our favorite customer. We are in business because of you. Our priority is to meet and exceed your expectations.

Until next month…

Sincerely,
